CRCH High School and Undergraduate Research Opportunities

The Cancer Research Center of Hawaii offers summer and year-round research opportunities in the CURE and Meiji-Yasuda Student Research Programs.
Program
Opportunity
Who may apply
CURE
Year round or Summer
Currently enrolled high school or undergraduate students from underrepresented minority groups.
Meiji-Yasuda
Summer only
Undergraduate students with a 3.5 GPA or greater and at least two years of university coursework in science.

The CURE Program, funded by the National Cancer Institute at NIH, introduces high-school and college students from underrepresented minority populations to the world of cancer research in real research settings. A person is an underrepresented minority if he or she belongs to a group that is underrepresented in cancer-related biomedical, behavioral, clinical, or social sciences research. Using this definition and available data on minority representation in cancer research, African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders are classified as underrepresented minorities. CRCH also considers Filipinos an underrepresented minority group although other Asians are not. To be eligible, students must be at least 16 years old, currently enrolled in high school or college, and from an underrepresented minority group. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and currently enrolled in high school or an accredited undergraduate institution. CURE students are paid hourly according to the University of Hawaii Student Research Fellow pay rates.

The Meiji Yasuda Program, funded by an endowment from the Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company in Japan, provides support for CRCH summer research fellowships for outstanding undergraduate students. To be eligible, the applicant must have a 3.5 GPA or greater and have completed at least two years of university coursework. Meiji Yasuda students receive a stipend of $3,000.

These programs are currently administrated by Dr. Gertraud Maskarinec and Ms. Karin Koga. Students spend a 10 week period as part of a research team after selecting an area of interest, such as: cancer biology, natural products, epidemiology, biostatistics, nutrition, or behavioral sciences. Once an area of interest is established, the student and the sponsoring scientist will design a research project to be carried out by the student over the course of the summer or year. In addition to the individual research projects, students within this program attend and participate in a variety of activities, including an orientation, student/faculty research meetings, lunchtime research seminars, and a final poster session and reception.

Applications (Word) are due March 1, 2008 for summer research. Applications for the year-round CURE program are accepted at any time. Applications must be endorsed by a Center faculty member who will mentor the student’s research. Students may contact faculty members via email to request endorsement of the application. Applicants to the Natural Products and Cancer Biology Program are required to have had one year of laboratory experience in organic chemistry.

Agreement by a faculty member to serve as a mentor does not assure that the applicant will be awarded a fellowship. In the event an applicant is not awarded a fellowship, he or she should contact the faculty mentor to see if they can participate in the proposed project on a volunteer basis or determine another source of funds. Multiple stipends or fellowships are not allowable by the CURE or Meiji Yasuda programs. CRCH does not provide housing for student researchers.
