Dr. Issell's personal research is directed towards discovering better ways to treat and rehabilitate cancer patients. His most recent work focuses on developing a Complementary and Alternative Medicine initiative that evaluates traditional practices of Hawaii's multicultural population including the use of botanicals for the control of cancer and its related symptoms. He is conducting a Phase I study of Noni that is supported by a National Institutes of Health R21 grant as a first step in the initiative. A recently completed RO1-supported project prospectively examined treatment patterns for women diagnosed with breast cancer in an effort to understand why certain ethnic groups such as Native Hawaiians and Filipinos experience a worse survival.
Administratively, Dr. Issell directs the Cancer Research Center's Clinical Trials Unit. He is principal investigator of the National Cancer Institute - supported, Cancer Information Service of Hawaii and the Hawaii Minority - Based Community Clinical Oncology Program for conducting clinical trials. As a practicing medical oncologist, Dr. Issell is a teaching attending on the Queen Emma Clinics Service at the Queens Medical Center.
